English — Dental care for expats in Prague

Whether you're on an employee contract, a freelance živnostenský list or a family visa, sooner or later you'll need a dentist in Prague. Here is what you should know before you book your first appointment.

Public vs. private dental insurance

If you are employed in the Czech Republic or hold permanent residence, you are enrolled in one of the public health insurers (VZP, ZPMV, OZP, ČPZP, VoZP, RBP). Public insurance covers basic dental care: check-ups, amalgam fillings, extractions, simple root canals and a basic denture. Anything considered "above-standard" — white composite fillings, dental hygiene, crowns, bridges, implants, whitening — is paid privately.

Freelancers and short-term visa holders often pay privately or through commercial travel / expat insurance. Ask the clinic to issue an itemised invoice in English so you can claim it back.

How to claim treatment back from expat insurance

1. Tell us before treatment that you need documents for an insurer — we prepare them the same day.
2. You receive an itemised invoice in English with treatment codes, tooth numbers, date and the clinic's ID (IČO).
3. Pay by card (Czech or foreign) or cash in CZK and keep the receipt attached to the invoice.
4. Upload both to your insurer's portal. Commercial expat and travel policies (VZP for foreigners, Slavia, PVZP, Allianz Care, Cigna) typically reimburse acute treatment; hygiene and cosmetic work is rarely covered.
5. Need a translation of an older Czech record? Ask — we can explain previous treatment in English at the appointment.
